DANJOU is a visualization tool for the ingredients in every recipe on
epicurious.com. Use the search
bars on the upper left to filter recipes by name or ingredient. Danjou is
designed to illustrate not only the elements a single recipe but the
commonalities between similar recipes, suggesting potential
substitutiions, additions and variations, rather than rote adherence to a
formula.
DANJOU is a "syntax engine." Unlike a search engine, which, in its linear
recitation of facts, privileges declarative knowledge ("knowing that"), a
syntax engine is intended as an aid to procedural knowledge, or "knowing
how": to complex activities which depend on creativity, improvisation,
loose rules of thumb, and internalized grammar (like cooking).
